Film: WHEN I WALK
Siskel Film Center
Chicago, IL2013, Jason DaSilva, USA/Canada, 80 min.
“One of the most honest and sincere films ever to grace the Sundance silver screen.” —Esther Meroño, Slug MagazineIn 2006, a family home movie caught filmmaker DaSilva taking an accidental tumble on a sandy beach. In retrospect, the fall was seen as the defining moment in his young life when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 25. Charting the course of his degenerative disease, DaSilva takes his audience on an six-year journey through changes, triumphs, and relationships that is no death march, but a personal tale that wowed them at Sundance this year with the filmmaker’s humor, courage, and insight. Lloyd Axworthy Discussion on Humanitarian Intervention
Cowles Auditorium
Minneapolis, MNThe U.S. government is frequently called upon with requests for humanitarian intervention by foreign governments, the international NGO community, and various other groups. As such, many are calling for the U.S. to adopt a “responsibility to protect” doctrine. “R2P”, as it has come to be known, raises serious questions about intervention on strictly humanitarian grounds: Is it legal? What are the ethics of using military force in response to human right violations? When and who should intervene? And finally, is it even effective? On May 21, join the Minnesota International Center and the University of Minnesota Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change for a discussion attempting to answer some of these questions with one of the world’s leading experts on humanitarian intervention, Dr. Lloyd Axworthy.
Speaker Biography
Dr. Axworthy’s political career in Canada spanned 27 years, six of which he served in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly and over two decades in the Federal Parliament. He has held several Cabinet positions, including a four year tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs during which he helped to establish the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty and the International Criminal Court in 1998. Upon leaving public office, Dr. Axworthy served as Director and CEO of the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia before his appointment as The University of Winnipeg's President and Vice-Chancellor in 2004.COST: MIC members, students and cosponsors $5; Non-members $15

Concert: Bear Mountain
Schuba's
Chicago, ILBear Mountain is an electronic dance band from Vancouver, BC. Stirring and soulful, they blend syncopated bass lines and arpeggiated synth chords with live instrumentation and soaring vocals to create a sound that is both deeply moving, and sweetly captivating. With old heartbreak on the mountain style vocals, Bear Mountain sings with powerful release and vulnerable honesty.
Bear Mountain began as the bedroom project of Ian Bevis. After releasing early demos and remixes online, Ian caught the ear of long-time friend and collaborator Kyle Statham. Together, the two friends brought the sounds to the stage by blending live instrumentation with dance style electronics. Their sound has been described as a mixture between Cut Copy and Passion Pit, infusing lead singer Ian Bevis’ vulnerable and emotive vocals.
